Today’s article on the Pro Recording blog is a review of the top 10 free vst plugins. Okay, technically “our favourite” VSTplugins because there are an astounding amount of great top quality VST plugins out there that are useful for all aspects of pro recording.
A high quality, very useful free phaser VST plugin offered by Melda Productions as part of their free plugin pack.
An awesome classicly inspired reverb that will sit well in your modern pro recording studio. Nicely customizable with twelve essential potentiometers and some great presets to start with.
Ambience (Demo Version)
This is one of the highest quality freeware reverbs on the Internet. It may not compare to high end commercial reverbs, but the functionality it provides is perfect for the budget-friendly home recording enthusiast who needs a professional sounding reverb with a selection of decent presets.
Voxengo Span is a specrum analyzer pluging that allows you to analyze the spectral information for an audio track. This lets you see what frequencies require equalization boosts or cuts. A spectrum analyzer is mandatory when mixing and we are fortunate to have access to a free VST plugin for this purpose. If you are using Reaper, there are spectrum analyzers in that software so you may not need to download this one.
Some great amp models can be found in the Shred amp model VST plugin by AcmeBarGig. I don’t use “cracked” software so I am always on the lookout for free and legit VST plugins. The cool thing about the Shred plugin is that it includes simulations for a large variety of well known guitar amps such as the re-branded “Marvell”. An unreal deal for amp models with awesome quality. It’s a little more low frilled than its main competitor Amplitube, but for free it’s definitely worth trying out.
GComp is a great freeware Compressor/Limiter plugin. A compressor is mandatory for adjusting the dynamic range of pro recordings. The cool thing about the GComp is it has the usual compressor controls of threshold, ratio, attack and release, and it also includes a limiter section and the ability to switch between peak and RMS monitoring. GVST also has a ton of other cool and useful VST plugins that are suitable for pro recording. Check them out.
The classic chorus by Kjaerhus Audio is one of the most well renowned chorus VST plugins on the net. It’s suitable for a variety of chorus sounds.
Endorphin by Digital Fish Phones is one little vst plugin that I tend use quite often. It’s perfect for when you just want a touch of classy compression and it’s very customizable. It is stereo switchable so you can use it on groups, tracks or the master track.
BootEQ is a great parametric eq that is freely available from the Variety of Sound homepage. Check out their site for a ton of other cool high quality VST plugins such as EpicVerb.
MDSP Flanger by Smart Electronix is an excellent free flanger that I have used for many years in my Pro Recording career. I like the fact that you can choose the different waveforms (triangle, sin, square, triangle exponential, random…). Another cool feature is that the LFO is synchronizable to the tempo!
